PROJECTS WE'VE SUPPORTED

Our dedicated board of trustees meet four times a year to review between 10 and 30 financial support applications. These are submitted by schools, colleges, music educators, and parents or carers of young people aged 4 to 21.

We are proud to support a wide range of music education projects across Bromsgrove, and we have awarded around £350,000 since our charity was founded in 2003.

Over the years, our funding has benefited every Middle School in the area, North and South Bromsgrove High Schools, and many First and Primary Schools.

First Access Music Education (FAME)

Among the initiatives we support is FAME (First Access Music Education), a whole-class instrumental programme facilitated by Severn Arts.

Every pupil is given the chance to learn an instrument, with no cost to families for either tuition or instrument hire. Their only responsibility is to enjoy the early sounds of practising an instrument at home!

If a pupil shows interest, they may continue learning in smaller groups the following year. We also fund ongoing group lessons to help young people develop their instrumental and vocal skills.

Projects we’ve supported have included:

My name is Alexa Young

  • Funding new keyboards for North Bromsgrove High School

  • Providing guitars and amps for South Bromsgrove High School, and a stage for their music department for their regular pupil performances

  • Funding instruments for Blackwell Concert Band

  • Funding for the performance of the musical “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Catshill Middle School pupils

  • Hosting a jazz workshop day in 2019, led by musicians Jonathan Silk and Chris Mapp in partnership with the Upton Jazz Festival. This brought together pupils from St John’s, Parkside, Catshill, and Alvechurch Middle Schools at Aston Fields

  • A community singing day and performance in the Artrix led by Alexander L’Estrange. This involved 120 pupils from Blackwell First School, Meadows First School, Lickey End First School and 40 adults from Bromsgrove Community Choir and friends

Seeing the children develop each year is a delight. In just half a year,  being able to produce a sound on the cornet, to being able to pitch different notes is no easy challenge. I still find it tricky!

Playing as part of a group has developed confidence and they showed so much pride in what they had achieved.

Without the support of the David Morgan Music trust, we would not be able to offer these opportunities for our children.

Private lessons

In addition to school-based programmes, we support young people taking private instrumental or vocal lessons outside of school. We fund up to 32 lessons per year, with families invited to apply based on their specific needs.

We’re also proud to have helped young musicians access inspirational opportunities at the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire and the CBSO Youth Orchestra Academy.
